The Manila clam is a small, edible saltwater clam native to the Indo-Pacific region. Native to the coasts of Japan, Korea, China, and the Philippines, they have been introduced to North America (West Coast) for aquaculture. They live buried in sandy or muddy sediments in shallow intertidal waters.
Appearance: They have a thick, oval-shaped shell that typically grows to about 3 to 6 cm (1.2 to 2.4 inches) in size. The shell color varies widely (grey, brown, yellow, or greenish) and features distinctive, radiating concentric ridges that give it a rough, textured look—which helps distinguish it from the smoother Northern Quahog (hard clam).
Flavor & Texture: They have a sweet, briny taste and a tender, slightly chewy texture. They are considered more delicate and sweet than many larger clam varieties.
