Japanese Black Kodama Watermelon (Red Flesh) is a premium, rare heirloom watermelon variety from Japan, also known as Black Jewel or Kurokodama. It is famous for its nearly black, thin rind and its exceptionally sweet, dense red flesh.
Appearance: The rind is a dark green color so deep that it appears almost black. As a "Kodama" (small ball) variety, the fruit is relatively small, typically weighing around 2.5 to 3 kilograms, making it easy to store and handle.
Texture & Flavor: The flesh is a deep red color with an extremely firm and crispy texture. It is very sweet, with a Brix sugar level typically around 11 degrees. Additionally, it has very few seeds, making it convenient to eat.
Origin: It is primarily grown in Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture and Ibaraki Prefecture, among other regions. Kumamoto, in particular, is known for its strict quality control over watermelons.
Cultivation: It is a relatively easy variety to grow, taking about 80–85 days from sowing to harvest. The rind is relatively hard, making it resistant to cracking.
Black Kodama watermelons are significantly smaller and have a relatively more approachable market price.
Cultivation: As an heirloom (open-pollinated) variety, you can buy its seeds and grow them yourself. It requires plenty of sunlight, suitable temperatures (75–95°F / 24–35°C), and well-drained soil.
Purchasing: In Japan, this watermelon is regarded as a high-end gift item. You can find it on Japanese online marketplaces (such as Amazon Japan) or through premium fresh produce channels, and it is sometimes exported to other countries and regions.
The Japanese Black Kodama Watermelon (Red Flesh) is a premium Japanese watermelon that combines a distinctive black appearance, small size, firm crisp texture, and rich sweetness all in one.
