Taiwanese Kyoho Grape refers to the Kyoho Grape (巨峰葡萄) variety that is cultivated and developed in Taiwan. It is not an entirely new variety, but rather originates from Japan. However, under Taiwan's unique climate and sophisticated agricultural techniques, it has developed a distinctive flavor and quality of its own.
Kyoho is a tetraploid hybrid grape variety (cross between European and American species). It was bred by Japanese breeder in 1937 by crossing the varieties "Ishihara Wase" and "Centennial". Its Japanese name "Kyohō" means "giant mountain grape." It was later introduced to Taiwan in the 1960s.
Taiwanese Kyoho grapes are renowned for their exceptional quality and are often called the "black gemstone of the fruit world."
Appearance & Bloom: The grapes have an attractive black-purple color and are large and plump, with individual berries weighing 10–12 grams on average, and premium grades reaching 15–16 grams. The skin is covered with a thick layer of natural white bloom (waxy coating) , which is a hallmark of freshness and high quality.
Texture & Flavor: The skin is thin, and the flesh is firm, juicy, and bursting when bitten. The flavor is characterized by high sweetness and low acidity, with a sugar content reaching 18–20 degrees Brix. The aroma is rich and fragrant.
Eating Experience: It is an easy-to-peel variety, making it convenient to eat.
Taiwan's Kyoho grape production areas are primarily concentrated in Changhua, Taichung, Miaoli, and Nantou:
Main Production Areas: Changhua County (Xihu, Dacun), Taichung City (Xinshe, Dongshi), Miaoli County (Zhuolan, Dahu), Nantou County (Xinyi, Shuili, Jiji).
Taiwanese Kyoho Grape is a source of pride for Taiwanese agriculture. It represents the pinnacle of quality that the Kyoho grape variety can achieve under Taiwan's terroir, making it a highly esteemed table grape.
